If you have seen James Cameron’s latest billion dollar hit, “Avatar”, you know it’s filled with great CGI and 3-D effects. It’s a breathtaking adventure from beginning to end. Believe it or not, some movie goers are feeling depressed after walking out of the three-hour flick. Forums have been popping up over the Internet with many saying they feel “depressed” and even “suicidal” after realizing the imaginary planet and people are not real.

On Avatar-Forums.com, one blogger wrote,”It’s very hard after seeing the move realizing that we won’t ever go there or be like them.” Another fan said,”I don’t want to let it go. It gets me sort of excited like the feeling you get when you free fall. I like it, but then reality strikes that I will never probably be able to go to a place like that with those brilliant people.”
Other topics of discussion include ways to act and live like the native people on the planet Pandora. Some even offer make-up tutorials to dress-up like the Na’Vi. Some people have watched the movie a total of seven times and planning on seeing it again.
Even though it’s the second highest grossing film of all the time, not all people are getting the same happy feeling devoted fans have. Criticism is coming from every side. “Avatar” is being called anti-American and racist. One group alleges having a white American save a different race send the message of non-whites can’t help themselves.
Senior Monica Chavez agrees the movie was great but doesn’t understand the obsession.
“I thought the movie was great. I don’t know why people want to be like them though.” Chavez said. “First, everyone wanted to be vampires now they want to be 10-foot blue aliens.”
Director James Cameron denies any racism in his movie by saying, “The movie asks us to open our eyes and truly see others, respecting them even though they are different, in the hope that we may find a way to prevent conflict and live more harmoniously on this world. I hardly think that is a racist message.”
Regardless of all the criticism, “Avatar” is on track to become the highest grossing film of all time by mid-February. It has been number one at the box office for six straight weeks only experiencing a 29 percent drop in ticket sales since opening weekend, according to the Wall Street Journal. Some reports state that “Avatar” is only $5 million to $47 million away from passing the current top spot holder, “Titanic.”
