The LHS Art Club met this afternoon to vote for a new design made by the members for the club T-shirts.

The two designs voted on were chosen by several club members who presented to the rest of the club next meeting to decide which to use. The winner of the two, senior Alex Clifton, was excited to be the one chosen, having big dreams about her future in art.

“I want to be an art major, especially in graphic arts,” Clifton said. ”I submitted the design because I thought it would look good for colleges and I want to be able to help the art club. I’m super happy I won.”

The other owner of these designs, Ramon Hernandez, is still proud of his accomplishment to be a nominee.

“It’s my first year in the club and I wanted to make myself known,” Hernandez said. ”Having my artwork recognized feels great.”

Deciding on the design for the club shirt can be somewhat crucial for the club as they prepare for their upcoming work.

“I was really hoping to have them finished by the Pumpkin Patch Festival,” Art Club sponsor Denise Davis said. ”It’s one of our biggest volunteering activity so we should really have them there.”

Though a design is being picked for the main shirt, students can also create shirts with any design they please.

“Having students create their own T-shirt makes them feel like they are a vital member of the club and have their own input, which is a good thing to feel,” Davis said.

Art Club members painted a mural for the senior special ed. students in the special ed. library Feb. 22-23, honoring the seniors by writing their names on the panther paws painted by the club members.

“We’ve actually been working on the idea for a couple of months,” Art teacher Denise Davis said. “The special ed. department asked if we were interested in doing this because of when we made a collage project a year or two ago.”

Davis said that the Art Club also has possible future projects in store only if the students are interested in doing them.

“We have a possible button fundraiser, where students will make custom buttons for people and sell them,” Davis said. “We are also trying to encourage more students to enter artwork for the Art Guild show.”

Senior Jacoby Taylor and Geometry Teacher Kirsten Wieseman were the winners of the 3rd annual Art Show last Wednesday. Pastel artist Barbara Richert was judge of the show.

“The reason why I chose Ms.Wiesemans piece was because it just blew me away,” Richert said. “The trees are just so mysterious. It gives off such an illusion of space. But now Jacoby’s, it’s a self portrait. This person draws very simply–it’s so brave in the attempt .”

Taylor said he was very surprised that his art work won in the show.

“My teacher Mrs. Davis actually made me be in it,” Taylor said. “It took me about a week to draw the picture of my nephew, but it was pretty easy. I just used basic map pencils to draw it and a ripped up sock for the hair.”

Wieseman was shocked that she won this year in the show.

“Well I was an art major in college,” Wieseman said. “So I kind thought that I ought to enter in the show. I was shocked that I won this year though,” Wieseman continues. “Because last year when I entered, I didn’t win because my art work tends to be different than usual. I took the pictures during Christmas break, so the pictures really inspired me to make the piece.”

Senior Kelley Chance’s art took first place in the Red Ribbon Billboard contest.

Chance first learned about the contest from a poster that was hung on the wall in the art wing at school.

“Mrs. Davis put a poster up in the art wing and kept reminding and encouraging me to enter,” he said.

The billboard contest included both high school and college students from the area. Chance’s inspiration for his art developed from his strong feelings about the subject of the contest.

“I felt like I should make an impact on the youth,” he said.

Chance was excited when he heard his art won first place.

“I’ve never won anything in my life,” he said, “so winning something felt good, especially something I want to do for a living.”

Chance will be graduating early this year to pursue his education in art at the Art Institute of Houston, where he will continue to achieve his bachelors degree in graphic design.

Chance’s art will soon be on a billboard in the area.
