Tigres UANL defeated Queretaro on Dec. 4 in the eliminating rounds in the Mexican Apetura to advance to the finals against Santos Laguna. Star player Lucas Lobos was dominating the mid-field while Queretaro were struggling to get the ball on goal. Alverez swung a cross to the box of the goal which did not get a Tigres player, but Queretaro’s own defender, Lopez Mondragon, right before half-time.

In the second half throughout the whole game the possession of the ball was 50/50, but that did not stop Tigres to score another goal to make the game more of a actual win. Marco Antonio Jimenez had stoppped the ball with his hand which was a straight foul, which gave Tigres Striker, Mancilla, a penalty to score on goal with no cautious.

The ball was shot poorly when Queretaro’s goalie Sanchez stopped Mancilla’s celebration for a goal. Queretaro kept their game face on but it was no match for Tigres advancing to the finals against Santos Laguna.

The MLS Cup final hosted at the Home Depot Center stadium on Nov. 20 was an exciting clash of two great skillful teams – LA Galaxy and Houston Dynamo.

These two teams had a competitive battle throughout the whole tournament to have a third cup in their trophy case and nothing was going to get in their way. Houston’s star players were Brian Ching and Geoff Cameron, but it was no match for LA Galaxy’s team star players David Beckham and the player of the game midfielder Landon Donovan.

This was the only goal scored throughout the match which ended a win and another cup for LA Galaxy’s team defeated the Houston Dynamo with their a standing of 67 points of 19 wins, 10 draws, and 5 loses.

The Lady Panther soccer coach Juan Encarnacion said he is glad the team will be home for the first playoff game next Tuesday. The post season play was clinched at the last regular season game when sophomore Moriah Phillips scored the winning goal last Tuesday against the College Park Cavaliers.

Phillips said if they had lost, their making playoffs would have depended on the Woodlands vs. Conroe game, but they wanted to make the playoffs on their own accord.

After winning the big game against the Cavaliers, Encarnacion had high expectation for his team.

” I expected them to go out and win, we did not want to depend on any one to take us to payoffs,” Encarnacion said.

The Lady Panthers played in a tough district with some of the top ranked teams in the state including the Woodland Highlanders and Kingwood.

“We knew it was going to come down to the last game,” Coach ‘E’ said. “Playing in a tough district will help us in the playoffs.”

The Lady Panthers is a young team with only two seniors.

“Most of the team has no experience and experience is something you have to have in the game of soccer,” Encarnacion said. “We did not play our best game Tuesday against College Park but I feel like the girls worked very hard and scored when we needed to. With out lack of experience I am sure they were nervous but they found a way to get out of it and finish hard”

Phillips added that the team “worked on just being disciplined and team work.”

Coach “E” said being able to start the playoffs at home has its advantages.

“The girls played two of the best teams in district and state and were able to play with them on our home field,” he said. “With our fans and student body, it helps in a major way. Klein is number one in their district finishing the season with a 16-1-2 record so we are expecting for it to be a good game.”

Phillips the team needs to be smart about their play against such a tough competitor.

“If we go into the Klein Oak game with the same mentality,” she said, “we will come out with a win.”

The Lady Pack hosted their second annual Showcase this past weekend, where both varsity and JV were both unbeatable in the showcase.

Varsity teams consisted of Lufkin, Willis, John Tyler, New Caney, Livingston, Nacogdoches, Diboll and Azle. But Lufkin Varsity only played three of these teams.

JV teams consisted of Lufkin, Nacogdoches, New Caney and John Tyler.

Lufkin JV came on top with a 1-0 win over Nacogdoches and Lufkin Varsity also came on top with a 2-0 win.

Lufkin JV played against an old district competitor, New Caney and beat them 8-0

The Lady Pack Varsity gave Willis a run for its money with a score of 6-0. Lufkin JV had another 8-0 win against John Tyler and Varsity who played Azle won 5-0.

Junior Crystal Zamora had a total of four goals which was the most scored by an individual player in the showcase this year.

“It wasn’t something I was going for, but I’m happy I was able to score for my team and put numbers on the scoreboard to help out my team,” Zamora said.

There were a couple of different things that were different in this showcase than last year’s, such as the new locker rooms, concession stand and also just the way of playing on the field.

“Having the locker rooms this year really helped out,” Zamora said. “It helped us stay out of the cold during half time and when we needed to use the restrooms we didn’t have to run all the way up to the stadium.”

The way of playing Lady Pack soccer has changed a bit since last year.

“Many people played different positions last year and we didn’t have such a young team last year compared to this team,” Zamora said, “which is good because Coach E can put us into new positions and we still have time to learn them really well, which is exactly what he did in this Showcase this year.”

Sophomore Shelby Smitherman was used to playing Defender, but when Coach E needed her up top during the showcase she really stood out by getting her a couple of goals.

“When he first told me I was going in as forward, I was really nervous,” Smitherman said. “I was always more comfortable playing stopper, but when I scored I was really excited and anxious to see what else happens being as forward.”

The Lady Pack Varsity will be traveling to the Tomball Tournament this weekend where they hope they can keep their undefeated streak alive.

This year the Lady Pack Soccer contains only two seniors, which is Coach Antonio Encarnacion, better known as Coach E’s, youngest team that he’s coached at Lufkin High School.

“There have always been more seniors on the team, but there’s always a first for everything,” Coach E said.

Diana Hernandez and Katie Kimmey are the two leading the Lady Pack this year. They’re both excited and looking forward to an excellent senior year.

Kimmey was the goalie for the Lufkin JV team her sophomore year and stepped up as a Varsity goalie her junior year she said, “I feel that even though we have a young team we have a lot of talent and a group of young working girls.”

Diana Hernandez has been playing soccer since the age of seven. She’s played the last three years for the Lufkin High School team, she started on JV then in the middle of her freshman year she was moved up to Varsity. “I feel like if we really try we can make it far, I just want to have a successful senior year and I’m not going to let any underclassmen ruin it.” said Diana.

Coach E is not a bit worried about the “young” team.

“Yes, I am approaching things differently this year than I did last year, but the only negative effect on this young team is they don’t have as much experience as a regular Varsity team would, and I don’t choose seniors over underclassmen, on my team the best players will play,” said Coach E.

He wants to go further than he has in previous years and is looking forward to a hard working season.

“This year I think we will do well,” he said.

The Varsity’s first scrimmage is on January 4, 2011 at Jase Magers at 5:00pm.

After battling the Conroe Tigers for a 0-0 tie Tuesday night, Paco Acevedo gives the Panthers the winning goal to defeat College Park Cavaliers and stay alive for the play off race tied with Conroe for the fourth place position.

The Panthers started the game fired up keeping the Cavaliers mostly in their side of the field, pressuring and attacking their goal as the Cavaliers defend it well.

The game was very intense and both teams gave out their best ending up the first half with a 0-0 tie.

“College Park played a great game tonight,” captain Andrew Lees said. “They gave us a great challenge defending their goal really well and attacking ours as well but we were shutting them down as they did”

As time was running out, Julio Islas sent a cross shot from the left side that the College Park goalkeeper was there to take. However, the ball got away from him and Acevedo was there to capitalize by heading the ball into the net.

Acevedo’s goal came when the College Park offense was pressuring the panthers defense, but the defense was up to the challenge and the Panthers were able to counter their way to their first goal in three games.

“It couldn’t happen to a better guy,” Coach Russell Shaw said. “He’s had to battle through injuries since before the season even started. He’s a little man but he went up high to head that ball in. It was a great play.”

The victory gave the Panthers a 4-3-1 district record and will be back in action Tuesday night on the road to take on The Woodland Highlanders.

“We put a big load on those guys to handle things in the back tonight,” Shaw said. “They gave us a chance to stay in this game and fortunately we were finally able to get a goal across.”

Lufkin battles its way to a 0-0 tie on the road against the Conroe Tigers Friday night.

The Lufkin Panthers started the game fired up pressuring the tigers all throughout the first half and defending their goal strong. The winning score came out of Julio Islas from a left throw in tipped by one of Tigers players with 10 minutes remaining in regulation. But after the refs ruled there was no goal, but the Panthers kept the pressure to end up in their first tie in 21 games.

“Our kids played very well tonight,” Lufkin head coach Russell Shaw said. “I thought both teams did.”

The Panthers managed to keep the pressure on the Tigers during over time hitting 2 shots on Post prom Luis Garcia.
