For LHS students who wanted to show off their artistic skills, a student art showcase was held from 5-6 p.m. on March 26 at the J.S. Moore Building.  Paintings, photographs, print making, drawings, and mixed media, were all shown.
“Having work in an exhibition is the final step in creating the work,” Art I teacher Denise Davis said.  “I feel there is something missing in the process if the work is never experienced by others.”
According to Davis, this experience helps students who are not aware or comfortable about the verbal aspect of art.
“If students choose to go into art at the college level they will be expected to talk about their work and the work of others,” Davis said.  “Just having your work up and viewed by others can be very uncomfortable, like speaking in front of a group, so getting comfortable with having their work viewed is a definite positive.”
Senior Leslie Lurma was one of the students whose art was displayed and said she enjoyed the experience.
“It was fun to talk with other people interested in art and have people look at mine, which was of a rain photograph cut into strips,” Lurma said.  “There was a mingling area, cookies and punch, and there was a drawing for names to win a session with J.B. Moore.”
Lurma was able to talk to Moore about art and if she had any pointers.
“She told me I was more than welcome to draw with her and that she does not do this for money, it is a hobby,” Lurma said.  “I enjoyed talking to her, she was really laid-back and cool.”
And Davis said another positive outcome of the art show is not just pointers, but praise.
“The obvious positive outcome of having their work seen is the complements that they get on their work,” Davis said.  “Praise is a powerful thing.”
