The 2008-2009 Panther Pride drill team officers were chosen and announced April 26. Next year’s captain is Laura McIlveene, and the lieutenants are Jazmin Camarillo, Shuntaviea Hall, Jesika Morgan, and Erinn Overby.
Director Johnna Walker explained the procedure that the officer candidates had to undergo in order to be eligible to be officers.
“The girls had to have 100 merits, no more than 20 demerits, they had to answer a questionnaire, and they had to learn a total of five dances,” she said. “They also had to go through an interview process.”
McIlveene said that she is excited to be captain.
“(Being captain) is fun, but it’s a lot of work,” she said. “My goals are to make the team closer and to make it the best that it’s been.”
Camarillo said that although she was disappointed that she didn’t get captain, she is still thrilled to be a lieutenant.
“I’m really excited about performing strut, which is the dance that the officers perform to the school song,” she said. “And I realize that there are a lot of responsibilities that go with being an officer, but I’m ready.”
She added that the new officers are preparing for an officer camp called Starmakers, which will take place June 9-12.
“It’s a competition where we also learn dances and bond as the new officers,” Camarillo said.
Walker said that she thinks the new officers will do a tremendous job.
“They are a very talented, smart group of girls, and they will be great officers,” she said.

I disapprove of the headline. The article is not about Laura McIlveene. It’s about all of the officers.
