The Meet the Panthers Pep Rally, which was scheduled for this Thursday, has been canceled due to the work that is being done on the track at Abe Martin Stadium.

Athletic Director John Outlaw said the track needed to be resurfaced because it was becoming a hazard.

“The track was 13 years old, and it was getting dangerous to have track meets on it,” Outlaw said. “It had cracks on it.”

The renovation was originally planned to be finished by Aug. 12.

“Apparently the company got tied up in another job, and they didn’t get here until the 23rd, which was out of our control,” Outlaw said.”Obviously, we can’t have people out on the track because it’s not finished.”

Varsity Cheer Coach TJ Patterson, who coordinates the pep rallies, said the track requires a certain amount of time to cure without any interruption.

“They need Thursday night to do all the finishing of it, and we have to get it ready for the football game on Friday night,” Patterson said. “They’re even moving the freshman game to the middle school.”

Patterson said although the biggest reason for the cancellation of the pep rally was the restoration of the track, it was not the only factor.

“It’s kind of late to have a Meet the Panthers at the third game,” she said. “We’ll just make the Homecoming/Honor Seniors Pep Rally on October 21 a bigger splash. Any routines that have been learned specifically for Meet the Panthers can be used during the year or saved for the next pep rally.”

Although the pep rally has been canceled, the football game on Friday will be played at the stadium whether or not the track is finished.
