“Hmm…I wonder if my son/daughter turned in his or her homework last night…”

Assuming things go according to plan, parents will be able to apply this phrase to their children sometime before the end of January with the new online grade system.

The system is essentially self-explanitory. Teachers will grade an assignment, then post the respective grade online where parents and students alike may view it from any computer by going to the LHS website, according to Stacy McCarty from the technology department who is currently helping teachers adjust and inform them of the new grade system.

“The legal guardian can sign up to receive a username and password to access his or hers child’s grades by printing out an access form,” McCarty said, “and returning it at the front office when the online system goes into effect.”

Teachers are adjusting well to the new grading feature, McCarty said.

“There’s been a few questions here and there,” she said, “but overall it’s been a very smooth transition.”

Under this new grade system, teachers will be encouraged to have grades submitted within five days of completion. Grades  also will be more detailed than the standard progress reports, McCarty said.

For example, parents will be able to click subject, view all given assignments (or lack there of), and the individual grades given, instead of just observe a cold finalized average.

“The online grading system will start with LHS and then move on to the corressponding LISD schools.” said McCarty. “Basically what this is doing is allowing parents to be better informed about how their child is doing in school.”

Students can view their own grades by going to the LHS website then looking to the “Parents” subcolumn at which point they can click on the “Online Grades Instructions” to gather more information.

Any questions may be e-mailed to piv@lufkinisd.org.

McCarty does warn parents that the grade they see during a grading period is not a final grade, but just a reminder.

“Just because the grades are online, does not mean the grades are finalized,” she said. “Grades are not final until the conclusion of the nine weeks.”
