Writing “Thank you” letters might not be at the top of the list for any senior. But according to Janice Ann Rowe of the LHS Alumni Association, one of the requirements for students to receive a scholarship is that they must write a “Thank You’”letter to their donors or they will forfeit their scholarships.

Rowe also said two other requirements must be met before the students receive the scholarships.

“Students must attend a mandatory meeting the week before award night,” Rowe said. “Finally, students must also be present for award night.”

Scholarship Awards Night is set for 6 p.m. May 10 in the new Tom Jack Lucas Auditorium.

Now that filling out applications and interviews are over, there were seniors who did not take advantage of the scholarship opportunity.

Only 132 out of 472 Lufkin  seniors applied for the Alumni Scholarship, according to Rowe.

“This year, the senior class has been one of the better senior classes we have had as a whole,” Rowe said. “The interviews went really well and all the applicants did a nice job this year.”

Rowe added that only eight applicants who signed up for an interview missed the interview, which is a change from last year which had 29 applicants miss their interviews.

Some recent graduates who are currently in college also reapplied for their scholarships.

“We had 40 college students reapplied for the Alumni scholarship,” Rowe said, “and we want to help them stay in school.”
