Five Lufkin High School Student Council members: Darrell Thomas, Aerial Adams, Deuntre “Bush” Smiley, Tia’ Myers, and Ivorie Ford traveled to Arlington, Texas to attend the Student Council State Convention earlier this month. This year’s convention was the largest attended, with 4500 students plus sponsors and adults.
This year’s theme was “The Time Is Now” and the students came back to Lufkin with a new perspective about leadership.
“What I got from the theme is that I shouldn’t wait to do things,” Smiley said. “I need to take control and become a better person and leader.”
Among meeting with other schools from Texas, the students took part in “Table-Top” Presentations and Platform Skits.
“The ‘Table Top’ Presentations are where each school has a table and they explain to you all the different things that they do in their community,” Ford said. “The skits are performed by the schools that want to be voted into State Office.”
On top of attending presentations and seminars, the students also sat down and listened to motivational speakers, Keith Hawkins and Craig Kielburger, and Myers said that Hawkins really “hit home” with her.
“We could relate to him and he was able to catch my attention,” Myers said. “I left with a good message from him.”
The students experienced many different things, met many people and Activities Director Patricia White said that’s the most rewarding experience of all.
“It is such a rewarding experience to see all the exceptional work that the students across the state of Texas do,” White said. “They are people who are enjoying life as we try to make it a better place for all to live.”
