To help the community save lives is very important and can sometimes be rewarded with a great gift. Gulf Coast Regional Blood Centers Power of life scholarship program will award eleven local high school students a $2,000 dollar scholarship, a total of $22,000, which will be given to provide for advancement of education. Three recipients of the scholarships are going to be chosen from the East Texas Region.

The Scholarship will be available to any student regardless whether he or she donates blood. However, those who do make the choice to donate will have their odds increased for receiving a scholarship.

The requirements to be considered for the scholarship include the student to have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale), and must submit a typed, single-spaced essay up to 500 words. To participate in the scholarship students must write about one of the following questions:

  • How can you motivate an individual or group of individuals to Commit For Life and become regular blood donors?
  • What can you do to contribute to our life-saving mission of ensuring an adequate blood supply if you are not eligible to donate?
  • What are some of the ways to high school donors as active donors after graduation?

For those interested in the scholarship information and signing up, they can to to the main website at www.giveblood.org/scholarship or contact Marcia Waller, at (936) 630-4154.

“The money is very useful for college and can help many of our students progress in life,” said Waller. “I mean the money is going to be useful, but what really matters is the effort and dedication that our students put forth to help people’s lives for those who need it”

All applications must be submitted by Feb. 28.
