The Panthers hope to improve in district tonight at College Park following Tuesday night’s second district game loss to the Conroe Tigers, 4-2 .
In the first half, the Panthers started off dominating the game by completing most of their passes and moving the ball around the field. The game was going in the Panthers favor until one slip-off mistake was made that cost them a shot against from the left side resulting in a score of 1-0 with 15 minutes left on the clock. Five minutes later, the Tigers took another left side shot to end the first half 2-0.
“We had great momentum coming into the games,” captain Andrew Lees said. “I don’t know how we were down two to nothing first half when we were dominating the whole time–that should of been in our favor.”
Coming into the second half, the Panthers were fired up scoring their first goal from a long shot by Eliseo Madera outside of the 18-yard box within the first 5 minutes to set the score 2-1. Willing to wait no longer, Daniel Aguiñaga took a power shot down to the bottom left side of the goal scoring the second for the Panthers to even up the match.
“I felt really confident about the game,” said Aguiñaga. “We really worked hard and came out ready to play second half, we just couldn’t keep up the same mentality we did at the start.”
As the game was locked up, the Tigers finally broke through scoring a shot from outside the 18-yard box to flow over goalkeeper Andrew Lees and take the lead with a 3-2 score. With the same momentum, the Tigers scored the finishing goal with 11 minutes remaining in the game to set the final score of 4-2.
“I actually thought we played well in the first half and we were still down by two,” Lufkin head coach Russell Shaw said. “We came out after half and got right back in it but when you let four goals in, you’re not going to win.”
The loss set the Panthers to be in third place in district behind The Woodlands and Conroe who are tied for first place.
