Lufkin defeats New Caney Eagles in first district game

Lufkin Soccer dominates first district game braking the scoring lump with 3-2 score with the goals scored by Julio Islas and Luis Garcia defeating the New Caney Eagles with home field advantage.
After loosing three consecutive shut out games, Lufkin offense comes fired up Friday night game.
New Caney scored a goal early 2 minutes into the game after a penalty kick was called in the box off a handball.
“I’m not sure if it was a handball or not in the first minute, but we could have done without that,” Lufkin head coach Russell Shaw said. “But the guys knew right away that we had to shake that off and get back in the game. They did a great job of working through the first half to tie it up. Then we took control and scored two goals in the second half.”
Falling back early in the game, Lufkin rises back up as Islas scored his first goal of the games four minutes before the end of first half with Garcia’s assist.
Islas gives the Panthers the lead 15 minutes into second half scoring his second goal of the games leaving them with a 2-1 score.
Garcia adds the third goal for the Panthers 10 minutes left in the game with a long assist from Captain Daniel Aguiñaga.
New Caney battled ot the last teen minutes putting the pressure on the Panthers to get a goal in the three remanding minutes of the game, but the Panthers held on to the score finishing off 3-2.
“After we went up 3-1, they really put the pressure on us and we had to battle right to the last whistle,” Shaw said. “I think that all the battles we’ve been through this season really helped us.”
The Eagles entered district with a a 6-0-4 undefeated record but falls as the Panthers add another victory to their 7-7-0 record.
The Panthers will be back in action Tuesday night at home field advantage facing the Conroe Tigers at 7 in Jase Majors soccer field.
