After battling the Conroe Tigers for a 0-0 tie Tuesday night, Paco Acevedo gives the Panthers the winning goal to defeat College Park Cavaliers and stay alive for the play off race tied with Conroe for the fourth place position.

The  Panthers started the game fired up keeping the Cavaliers mostly in their side of the field, pressuring and attacking their goal as the Cavaliers defend it well.

The game was very intense and both teams gave out their best ending up the first half with a 0-0 tie.

“College Park played a great game tonight,” captain Andrew Lees said. “They gave us a great challenge defending their goal really well and attacking ours as well but we were shutting them down as they did”

As time was running out, Julio Islas sent a cross shot from the left side that the College Park goalkeeper was there to take. However, the ball got away from him and Acevedo was there to capitalize by heading the ball into the net.

Acevedo’s goal came when the College Park offense was pressuring the panthers defense, but the defense was up to the challenge and the Panthers were able to counter their way to their first goal in three games.

“It couldn’t happen to a better guy,” Coach Russell Shaw said. “He’s had to battle through injuries since before the season even started. He’s a little man but he went up high to head that ball in. It was a great play.”

The victory gave the Panthers a 4-3-1 district record and will be back in action Tuesday night on the road to take on The Woodland Highlanders.

“We put a big load on those guys to handle things in the back tonight,” Shaw said. “They gave us a chance to stay in this game and fortunately we were finally able to get a goal across.”
