Lufkin’s Lady Pack softball teams hard work has finally paid off for them after long weeks of hard practice and close back to back games to give them a win over the College Park Cavaliers. Giving up could have been an option for the Lady Pack, considering their tough season so far, as they were down 5-1 until the bottom of the seventh.
K.K. Samford, who went 3 for 3 with a triple and a pair of singles, launched a three run, walk off homer to give the Lady Pack its first district victory of the season, 6-5 Friday night at Morris Frank Park.
“The girls deserved this,” head coach Heather Slaton said. “We’ve lost so many one run games or close games when we just couldn’t hang on or close it out. I really believed we were due for a win.”
In the bottom of the seventh was when Lufkin started its rally, when Hope Montelongo led off with a walk and scored when Lindsey Lyles hit turned into a three base error. Nicole Castillo then put out a perfect bunt for a single, and Blaire Reynolds drove in Lyles with a single to put the College Park lead to 5-3.
The last batter was the one who made a difference, as Samford blasted a pitch over the fence to end the game 6-5.
Lufkin will travel to The Woodlands Tuesday, with game time set at 6 p.m.
