After a successful start to the season by taking first place in their own tournament, the Lady Panther varsity soccer team traveled to Tomball to compete in a two day tournament where they came up just short of winning first place.
In the tournament, the Lady Panthers competed against 4 of the 10 teams involved. The tournament champion team was determined by points earned from wins, goals scored, and goals scored upon. Wins in the tournament were good for six points, Ties for three points, no points for losses and a point was subtracted for each goal scored against. Goals scored were worth one point a piece, however, the maximum points a team could receive for a game was nine.
Lufkin defeated Jersey Village 4-1 and Westbrook High School 2-0 Friday and carried 17 points into the second day of the tournament.
On Saturday, the Lady Panthers faced-off with Cypress Ranch and won 3-0 leaving them to begin their final game against host team, Tomball High School, with 26 points.
Lufkin started off the game with fast play and forward Kendall King put the ball in the net within the first 3 minutes of the half. Midway through the second half, Tomball was awarded a penalty kick in which they tied-up the game. At the end of the game the score remained tied, so the match was carried over with two 10 minute over-times. Although Lufkin dominated in over-time, the score resided at 1-1 so the match ended in a tie.
As a result, Lufkin took second place with 30 points and Tomball took third with 29. Klein Collins came out of their first three games with 22 points, which at the time put them in third behind Lufkin and Tomball, however they beat their final opponent, Duchesne, 3-0 putting them in first place with 31 points.
According to Lufkin Varsity girl’s head coach Antonio Encarnacion, the tournament was a stepping stone for his team this season.
“We got better every game of this tournament and that’s what our goal is at this point in the season,” he said.
Lufkin’s senior captain, Kendall King, is proud of her team for winning second place.
“We played our hearts out during each game and I am so proud of everyone,” King said.
Remaining undefeated with a record of 6 wins, 0 losses, and 1 tie, Lufkin will be back on the field Tuesday to play Longview at 7 at Longview High School.
