Lufkin baseball players Chase Greening and Seth Thompson signed a letter of intent to play baseball for Angelina College on Jan. 20. Even they have signed a letter of intent, they do not have to honor that letter of intent if they are drafted in the Major League Baseball First Year Player draft in June.

Greening, a senior pitcher, went 5-2 last season with 2.59 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 44 1/3 innings along with three complete games. Greening is expected to play a big role this season for the Panthers on the mound en route to his first season as a Roadrunner.

“It’s JUCO (junior college) school that should prepare me and hopefully get ready for the draft or two more years at another school,” Greening said.

Thompson, a senior outfielder, hit .295 last season with a home run and 19 RBI. Thompson also added 12 stolen bases and scored 19 runs and signed with AC because of the school’s location.

“I really know the coaches, plus it’s close to home and I wouldn’t get home sick,” Thompson said, “but it’s a good start to develop me for a DI (Division I) school.”

The Panthers will begin the season Feb. 26 in the Bryan/College Station Tournament.
