Despite coming in at second place behind a strong Woodlands team, the Lady Pack managed to set a school record in the Mile Relay with a time of 3:53.74.

Lufkin’s Amber Sellers, who played a part in the record setting performance her freshman year, was once again a part of a record breaking squad.

“Everyone had to run their part, not one person could slack,” Sellers said. “We were all focused and did exactly what was expected of us.”

Sellers also credited the “extra rush” to the high expectations the team was held to by its coaches.

Lufkin’s Chaun Williams had a surprising performance at the meet as well. Although Williams is known for her great leaping ability in the triple jump, she countered her poor outcome in triple jump with a qualifying performance for regionals in the Long Jump.
“I feel pretty good about it even though this isn’t the event I wanted to go in,” Williams said. ‘I’m just happy I’m going.”
Regional qualifiers for the Lady Pack consist of the 4×100 relay team with a time of 48.49; the 4×200 relay team with a time of 1:43.04; the mile relay team with a time of 3:53.74; Olivia Mckinney in the 800 meter dash with a time of 2:18.09; Taylor Lowery in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.75; Keyana Penson in the 400 meter dash with a time of 57.87 and Sellers in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 43.27.
Lufkin’s boys also had a exceptional showing at the district meet.

Future University of Texas defensive back Carrington Byndom helped the Mile Relay team finish strong after falling behind in the middle of the race.

“We did well and finally beat our personal record,” Byndom said. “Next week we’re going to focus more on better handoffs.”

Upcoming freshman trackstar for Lufkin Chris Durham showed off his athletic ability at the district meet finishing the 400 meter dash in second place.

“My eighth grade year Coach Earley helped me a lot because he ran the 400 when he was in school,” Durham said. “It feels good.”

Regional qualifiers for Lufkin’s boys were the 4×100 relay team with a time of 41.93; the 4×200 relay team with a time of 1:28.48; the 4×400 relay team with a time of 3:21.12; Durham in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.30 and Byndom in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.02.

In all, Lufkin High will flood the regional track meet with a sea of purple pride with the majority of both the boy’s and girl’s track team making the big trip.

The two-day regional meet is to take place at Baylor University on April 26-28.
