The SkillsUSA Presentation Team displays the first place medals won at the district SkillsUSA competition in Beaumont. The team is preparing for the state competition March 24-28 in Corpus Christi.

In an effort to receive a perfect score at state competition, SkillsUSA presentation team has been giving their presentation to a variety of groups.

Four students assigned to present the home at SkillsUSA, Champions at Work competition have scheduled several opportunities for them to practice giving their speech.

Senior Clark Thannisch felt the butterflies disappear at district competition after noticing the inetrest the judges had in the Habitat for Humanity.

“At first I was nervous. The nerves were gone before long though because the judge started asking lots of questions and seemed very interested in our project,” Thannisch said. “I knew that whatever competition we had could not come close to beating us because of the magnitude of our project.”

Team adviser Brian Crews was confident from the very beginning that his team would go the second mile with the community service project. By taking this project to different organizations confirmed the views of the team.

“The students chosen to represent the project were hand-picked based on their overall involvement and interest in this type of event,” Crews said. “I felt confident the students chosen would represent the project, school, and themselves very competitively.”

Career and Technology Director Stephen Rhoades has made the assessment that representation plays a major role in the SkillsUSA competition. Rhoades feels that the students on the presentation team have done an outstanding job in representing all areas of contribution in this community service project.

“I am very proud of the efforts the students have placed in preparation for this project,” Rhoades said. “They represent the entire design and construction team, Lufkin High School and the community very well. They are simply the voice and face of the community.”

Senior Diego Vallejo believed that the presentation team was well prepared for district competition. Vallejo gained confidence in bringing home the gold due to the amount of time spent preparing for the competition and who was involved in getting the job done.

“I felt that the team Mr. Crews put together was well prepared for competition,” Vallejo said. “ After several hours of practice, the team felt confident enough to present in front of anybody.”

SkillsUSA tech member Clark Groom found confidence in the unity of the home created in both the student body and community. As a result, Groom believed that competition was a “done deal” and that state would be a breeze now that all the necessary elements were obtained through district.

“With the project at hand, I felt that the magnitude of the community work being done would not only bring the student body of Lufkin High School together, but it would also bring the community together,” Groom said. “With everyone on board with this project, I felt that we had all the elements needed to excel in competition.”

The SkillsUSA presentation team was successful in district competition and will be attending state in March 24-28. Before state competition, the team will present to LISD administration and staff.

“The students demonstrated their abilities at the district level competition by achieving a perfect score from the judges,” Crews said. “They are ready for state.”
